Maurilo is a small village perched on Velouchi at an altitude of 920 m . It is known for its gunpowder mills that played a decisive role in the revolution of 1821. The village is full of springs, wells and streams which were used in the past not only for irrigation but as the driving force of water mills. In the village square you will see the beautiful church of Agios Dimitrios, which was built in the 17th century, while at the entrance of the village there is a traditional stone bridge built in 1900 and a renovated powder mill and watermill.
The village is surrounded by dense forests with firs, oaks and many chestnut trees. In late October (since 2008), a chestnut festival is organized by the municipality of Agios Georgios Tymfristou. During the celebration in 2010 there were roasted chestnuts, “tsipouro” from chestnuts and a performance with traditional dances and songs.
